Can breathing improve your fitness?

Something Personal: What? ↓

This is me taping my mouth shut with medical paper tape before playing tennis.

If you think I’m crazy, this simple trick is already used by top athletes — including Wimbledon champion Iga Świątek, currently ranked No. 3 in the world.

Something Scientific: Why?

Breathing through your nose strengthens your breathing muscles, improves stamina, boosts recovery, and so much more.

“It’s hard, it can’t be good?!”

Improving your breath is like training your muscles.

Building muscles — no one would say, “It’s hard, it can’t be good?!”

Lifting a feather feels easy, but you won’t build muscles. However, when you add resistance, it feels harder, your body adapts, and eventually, you get stronger.

The same goes for breathing.

The slight discomfort you feel from nose breathing during a workout is what creates adaptations, and that’s when you improve your breathing.

You know the feeling of gassing out after giving it all you’ve got? By improving your breath, you delay that feeling and can go harder for longer.

Pretty empowering.

Something For You To Practice: How?

Just like building muscles, it doesn’t happen overnight, and you won’t start with the heaviest load.

Start by learning the essentials of healthy breathing. It’s the foundation that sets you up for real progress and long-term, sustainable improvement.
